Yet, as with many other contemporary
Chinese silversmiths of the day, tea
sets were very much part of the core
merchandise one would expect to find
at Wang Hing, as in the circa 1890 set
[below]
Chinese silversmiths liked nothing more than expressing their ironic senses of humour in quirky silver items
that oozed style.
Proving that small is beautiful, the following illustrated circa 1900 cream jug with its matching sugar basin are
stunning examples of Wang Hing’s creativity and imagination. The insects are actually stylised wasps [féng] -
the allegorical combination of wasps with bamboo has the meaning “May you live in abundance”.
