WE WE WC [FULL NAME UNDOCUMENTED]
            Old China Street, Canton
            circa 1815-1880

One of the so-called pseudo-hallmark makers and one of the most discussed since research
into Chinese Export Silver began. This particular mark imitates closely the London hallmark of
William Eley, William Fearn & William Chawner. The maker used this mark in varying guises
                            for 60 years.

[Left] The London hallmark of Eley, Fearn & Chawner. WE WE WC silver was often in the high
Georgian style and it is thought the maker began life under this banner, copying English
Georgian silver - which it did extremely well. Note the date mark “N” denotes the year 1808. In
all the pseudo-marks for WE WE WC, there is a mark “P” masquerading as a year stamp but in
reality has no meaning whatsoever. However, there is a school of thought that believes there
may well be a link between the WE WE WC mark and the Canton mark “P” [below] - both use
an incuse rectangle with cut corners. Research is continues into this matter.
