The ink stone is carved with a dragon and a
phoenix confronting a faming pearl amidst
clouds between the shaped well and grinding
surface.

1881- 1967) Collection, New York, and
thence by descent within the family.

A RECTANGULAR DUAN INK STONE
18TH CENTURY, WITH A DATED INSCRIPTION
CORRESPONDING TO 1798
The ink stone is fnely carved on top with
dense clouds and with a beaded edge around
the shaped well and grinding surface. The
reverse is carved in the recessed center with
a lengthy inscription followed by a Jiaqing
2017 wuwu cyclical date corresponding to 1798.

PROVENANCE:
The K’ung Hsiang-Hsi (Kong Xiangxi,
1881- 1967) Collection, New York, and
thence by descent within the family.
The inscription indicates that the present ink
stone had been in the owner’s possession for
thirty years and was like a precious old friend to
him, and he would not want to lose it.
