A RECTANGULAR DUAN INK STONE
17TH CENTURY
The well is carved with a lengthy calligraphic inscription referring
to village life, followed by Wancun yu Renzuo (from Wancun to
Renzuo), indicating that this ink stone was a gift from Lü Wancun
(1629-1683) to Renzuo.

PROVENANCE:
The K’ung Hsiang-Hsi (Kong Xiangxi, 1881- 1967) Collection,
New York, and thence by descent within the family.
Wancun was the sobriquet of Lü Liuliang, a Han Chinese poet and author
from Tongxiang, Zhejiang province, who took active part in the anti-
Manchu military movement that followed the fall of the Ming in 1644.
