     HEXAGONAL BRUSH POT

     LATE QING DYNASTY

     The hexagonal brush pot is raised on three tab feet and veneered
     with tortoiseshell on all surfaces with the exception of the interior.
     Each facet of the exterior is incised and gilt with an inscription,
     above the base with a Guangxu yuzhi mark.
     4¬ in. (11.8 cm.) high

     Provenance:

     A Parisian family collection, acquired in the late 19th century

     The inscriptions on the exterior are as follows:

           Gong chong wei zhi (great vision leads to great achievement)
           Zhi li ze zhe (wisdom is knowing one’s own ability)
           Zuo Zongtang zhenyong (for the use of Zuo Zongtang)
           Zheng da guang ming (integrity and decency)
           Ri sheng yue he (as prosperous and everlasting as the rising sun
           and crescent moon)
           Hongshutang cang (collection of Hongshutang, studio of Zuo
           Zongtang)

     Zuo Zongtang (1812-1885) was a statesman and military leader in the
     late Qing period.
