                          The lacquer-coated handle of irregular
                          form is carved in the shape of a mythical
                          animal. It is attached with long tufts of
                          fibre hair on one end.
                          The handle: 8Ω in. (21.5 cm.) long,
                          Japanese wood box

                          Provenance:

                          According to the original Japanese wood
                          box, the fly whisk once belonged to Ema
                          Tenkou (1825 -1901), who was one of the
                          founding members of the private school,
                          Ritsumeikan, which later became the
                          Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto.
