Drunken Sleep in Yihong Garden
Ink and color on paper, album leaf mounted as a hanging scroll, inscribed and signed Qing
Xi Qiaozi Qian Hui’an followed with one rectangular relief seal of the artist reading Jisheng.

Inspired by a scene from Dream of the Red Chamber, Qian Hui’an depicts the chapter
in which Granny Liu, a distantly-related elderly cousin from the countryside, visits the
family compound of the wealthy Jia Family. Amazed by the extravagance and grandeur
of the mansion, she drinks too much at dinner and finds herself lost in the Grand View
Garden, eventually stumbling upon a courtyard to have a rest. The courtyard, belonging
to the main character Jia Baoyu, the youngest son who was attended by forty servants,
was filled with luxuries like the mirror that Granny Liu stares at in wonder.
