The Carved Brush, Calligraphy Painting and Seal Carving By Qi Baishi, 亞洲博物館

Although undated, this fan was likely painted by Qi Baishi in his early years. His use
of the Azhi seal is one indication and his figural depictions after his seventies are
scarce. With a minimum of brushstrokes, Qi Baishi’s depiction of the Daoist immortal
Li Tieguai recalls the quick expressive approach of the Song and Yuan dynasty Chan
Buddhist painters, as interpreted by 18th century Yangzhou eccentric artists Jin Nong Book cover image
(1687-1763) and Luo Pin (1733–1799)
