Meiji/Taisho Period
Decorated in relief with blossoming prunus
branches on stippled grounds; and a silver
chrysanthemum-form bowl and stand set on
three leaf-form cabriole legs, the stand with
a central monogram, stamped K.Uyeda and
Sterling. The stand 30cm (11.7/8in) diam.

BOX AND COVER
Meiji Period
Containing six square trays, decorated with
a variety of birds amongst flowering plants
issuing from rockwork, pine and bamboo on
grassy hillsides. Each tray: 27cm (10.5/8in)
square, the box: 61cm (24in) x 41.5cm
(16.1/4in) (8).

COUNTERS
Meiji Period
The rectangular box finely painted in gilt with
a central shield crest reserved on a leafy
grapevine meander and zig-zag border,
the interior with five similarly decorated
compartments containing a quantity of
circular, oblong and wider oblong mother-
of-pearl counters, each engraved with the
327 matching crest.
The box: 30cm (11 3/4in) wide (qty).

Although it is similar in form to the familiar
Chinese examples made in the Canton
area in the late 18th and early 19th century,
both the style and the techniques of the
decoration suggest that this set of boxes
was manufactured in Japan, possibly in
Nagasaki, as part of a private trade in export
lacquer ware which flourished during the later
Edo period.
