(WRITING BOX) AND COVER
19th century
Elaborately decorated in relief with a bijin
in a fenced garden, before a blossoming
cherry tree, the lid interior with a cart bearing
a flower basket with a profusion of peony,
chrysanthemums and blossoming stems, the
box interior continuing the design and fitted
with a suzuri (ink-stone) and metal melon-
form suiteki (water-dropper).

Meiji Period
Containing a gilt lacquered wood figure of
Amida Buddha on a lotus pedestal, set on
a multi-tiered stand, and backed by a kohai
324 (nimbus), the interior of the doors gilded and
painted with images of Kannon floating upon
wispy clouds. 35.5cm (14in) high.
