                                                             Each raised on a carved lotus flower base, rising to a tall openwork
                                                             stand formed with four-part foliate spandrels, respectively supporting
                                                             a jewelled parasol, chatraratna, and a victory banner, dhvaja, atop
                                                             another layered lotus flower.

           A LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF KASYAPA
           Yuan/Ming Dynasty
           Finely carved standing upright with hands held in anjali mudra at his
           chest, dressed in priest’s robes secured by a rectangular ring tied to
           a cord at the left shoulder, his long, gaunt face with deep-set eyes
           and pronounced features set in a serene expression, stand. 35cm
           (12in) high. (2).

           Provenance: A European private collection

           Kasyapa was one of Buddha’s ten principal disciples. When he first
           met Buddha, he was already in his late eighties. He was a teacher
           in his own right and had a large following. After an encounter with
           Buddha, Kasyapa recognised Buddha’s superior wisdom and
           converted along with all of his disciples.
