A FIVE-COLOR-OVERLAY WHITE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE

The bottle is carved through the translucent overlay of ruby-red,
sapphire-blue, turquoise, amber-yellow and olive-green to the 1760-1830年 涅白地套五色玻璃八吉祥紋鼻煙壺
white ground with the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang), and the
foot is cleverly formed by the green conch shell. 286

The larger is carved using the russet-brown areas of the warm grey
286 stone with lotus leaves and grasses, and a small hovering insect on one
side. The smaller is carved using brown areas of the pale grey stone
on side with two buddhist lions, one with a brocade ball, and on the
reverse with a cat laying on a rock as it looks up at a butterfy.
