a delicate tree extending diagonally over a
pond with fish and various insects either in
flight or on moss-covered rocks, one side

in 1891), signed Zhou Leyuan with his studio
name Ouxiang Zhai (the Studio of Lotus-Root
Fragrance), one seal reading Yuan yin.
3in (7.6cm) high
$2,500 - 4,000
This work exemplifies the artist’s excellent
command of composition and his superb
ability to present the finest details in nature.
The fresh and subtle blue applied in this
painting is a unique and signature color that
Zhou Leyuan experimented with in the middle
of his career. Compare another inside-painted
snuff bottle by Zhou Leyuan with similar blue
color decoration, dated 1890, illustrated in
the exhibition catalog Chinese Snuff Bottles:
A Miniature Art from the Collection of George
and Mary Bloch, Hong Kong Museum of Art,
1994, pp. 387-388, no. 316.
