A CARVED AND INSIDE-PAINTED ROCK
CRYSTAL SNUFF BOTTLE
Ye Zhongsan, 1895, the bottle: 1750-1850
Well-hollowed, the compressed globular
bottle carved on the exterior walls in low relief
with elaborate pine trees rising precariously
from rocky outcropping, the interior painted
with episodic scenes from the fiction work
Liaozhai Zhiyi, one side featuring an interior
scene with Huan Niang seated by a zither
and two figures standing nearby, the reverse
depicting Qiao Niang and other figures in a
garden setting, dated yiwei (1895), signed Ye
Zhongsan, one red seal mark.

Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Tales from a Chinese
Studio) is a collection of nearly 500 mostly
supernatural tales written by Pu Songling
in classical Chinese during the early Qing
Dynasty. Huan Niang (Lady Zhao Huan) and
Qiao Niang are two figures in the stories.

AN INSIDE-PAINTED FACETED ROCK
CRYSTAL SNUFF BOTTLE
Ye Family Studio, 1916
The tapering bottle with symmetrically
faceted sides, the interior painted in bright
colors featuring the theme of Zhongkui jia
mei (Zhongkui married off his young sister),
with Zhongkui riding a donkey surrounded
by xiaogui (small demons), followed by his
sister in a cart and her attendant beneath
five auspicious bats, dated bingchen xiafu
(summer of 1916), with a Ye Zhongsan
signature and one seal mark.
