SNUFF BOTTLE
Ma Shaoxuan, 1914
Of compressed form with a flat lip and oval
foot rim surrounding a convex foot, one
side painted with the legendary Eastern
Han dynasty figure Zuo Ci indicated by the
two-character inscription, the reverse with
an inscription related to Zuo Ci, dated jiayin
(1914) and signed Ma Shaoxuan with one
painted seal.

AN INSIDE-PAINTED ROCK CRYSTAL
SNUFF BOTTLE
Ma Family, 1898
The rounded rectangular bottle supported
on a spreading oval foot, its neck flaring
towards a flat lip, the interior painted to one
side with a scholar pointing at a potted plant,
his attendant holding a water pot squatting
by another flower pot, the top inscribed with
a two-line poem echoing the painted theme,
followed with a seal reading Shaoxuan, the
reverse dated wuxu (1898), inscribed with a
poem, with a signature Ma Shaoxuan and an
additional Shaoxuan seal mark.

The poem describes a lively spring scene
with people enjoying the colors and the
pleasure that the season brings.
Compare a very similarly painted snuff
bottle, inscribed with a different poem to the
reverse side, signed Ma Shaoxuan, from the
Collection of Margaret Polak, sold in our New
York rooms, 24 March 2010, sale 18369, lot
169.
