It became a paddling game
to watch for landmarks on
the horizon like powerlines
or a ridge of evergreens
stretching out to narrow the
view north or east, even
west, and realize the lake
was ending and maybe a
new foliage or environment
might be there.
Often paddling along sud-
denly a landmark would ap-
pear up around the bend and
like a shot of adrenaline it
would inspire more pad-
dling.
