JOHNNY DEPP
AS COLONEL JOLL
Born on June 9th, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, Johnny Depp land-
ed his first film role in Wes Craven’s iconic A Nightmare on Elm Street
(1984). Darker, idiosyncratic performances would come to define the ac-
tors early career, as he formed an indelible partnership with Tim Burton
on films like Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), and Sleepy
Hollow (1999).
In 1997, Depp played an undercover FBI agent opposite Al Pacino in Mike
Newell’s Donnie Brasco, which went on to earn over one hundred million
dollars worldwide. He then earned positive reviews for his role in Terry
Gilliam’s adaptation of the iconic Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loath-
ing in Las Vegas, before pivoting to work with legendary director Ted
Demme on the crime epic Blow (2001).
One of Depp’s most memorable turns came in 2003, when he landed
the coveted role of ‘Jack Sparrow’ in Jerry Bruckheimer’s Pirates of the
Caribbean. The fantasy series, based on the Walt Disney’s theme park
ride of the same name, has since earned over four billion dollars at the
box office.
Depp would go on to reunite with his old friend Tim Burton on Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd (2018), Alice in Won-
derland (2010), and Dark Shadows (2012). Alice in Wonderland became
the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time during its theatrical run, earning
over one billion dollars worldwide, while Sweeney Todd earned Depp his
third Academy Awards nomination.
In 2018, Depp will star in Warner Brother’s highly anticipated next entry
in the Harry Potter series, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
