Never lose focus as to why you are here. Working in Child Support is difficult because you are dealing with
what people value the most, their children and their money. You will have good days and bad days. At times it
really seems like a thankless job. Working in Child Support isn't for everyone, and you really do need to have a
passion for helping children get the support they are entitled to receive.
Plan for retirement, it really does get here faster than you think!
How do you envision your retirement, and what are some of the activities or projects you look forward to in
this new chapter of your life?
• My husband and I have a bucket list of places we want to travel to. We already have two trips planned.
We are going to Mexico for a week and an eleven-day cruise at the end of the year.
• We are blessed in that we both still have our two sets of parents. Life is short and we would like to
spend time with them while we still can.
• We also plan on helping watch our two grandchildren who were born earlier this year.
• I also would like to exercise daily and get physically fit.
Can you recount a memorable or humorous story from your career that stands out to you?
I had a customer come into the office because he had a wage garnishment for county owed arrears. He and his
wife had reconciled. He was having a difficult time paying the arrears and supporting his family. He wanted the
wage garnishment lowered. Something didn't seem right with the balance. After reviewing the case I
discovered a mistake had taken place at the time the order was loaded. After auditing the case, we discovered
he had overpaid the arrears owed to the county. Not only were we able to stop the garnishment, but he also
received a refund! His reaction was like he had just won the lotto!
JASPER DEFRANCO
SHERIFF’S SERGEANT
RETIRING DECEMBER 30, 2023
What inspired you to pursue your career, and how has it evolved over the
years?
My original inspiration for working for the Sheriff’s office was back in 1992
when I was summoned in for jury duty. As I was sitting through jury
selection, I was watching the bailiff closely and noticed his sense of
dedication, pride, and prestige which was extremely inspirational. After
completing jury duty, I went directly over to the sheriff’s office and picked
st
up an application. I self-sponsored myself through the 1 Monterey Police
Academy at Monterey Peninsula College (Class #1) and applied for the
sheriff’s office as soon as I graduated from the academy. At that time, the academy was a yearlong weekend
