Police Explorers Analysis
The Red Oak Police Explorer Post #1132 has been in existence since 2006. Since that time the
Primary Advisor for the program has be Lt. Jim Langham of the Red Oak Police Department. Lt.
Langham is assisted by Associate Advisor Joane Muhammad, who also serves as the
Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Police. The post currently has 8 members. Alex Falcon
holds the rank of sergeant and acts as the ranking explorer for the program. All are either currently
enrolled in Red Oak High School or have recently graduated from there. The ranking officers are
tasked with running the post as though it were a police agency. They manage the post’s finances,
facilitate training as well as organize, plan and supervise events that the post is involved in. The
explorers provide traffic and crowd control for City events such as Founder’s Day, Red Oak White
and Blue and Christmas in the Park. The post is financially self-supportive. This is accomplished
through semi-annual dues and by a generous donation from Reindeer Manor for providing traffic,
parking and crowd control for their annual haunted house event. The Law Enforcement Exploring
program is part of the Boy Scouts of America. It is intended for youth ages 14 to 21 that have an
interest in a career in law enforcement. If a potential member has passing grades in school, is of
good moral and ethical character and has no disciplinary issues at home, school or in public then
they are welcome to apply. If accepted, they will receive similar training to that of a police cadet
in a police academy. They will have the opportunity to ride out with officers and see firsthand
what a career in law enforcement entails. This is a very hands-on, realistic, program that exposes
the explorers to as much as they can safely be exposed too. Their knowledge and skill are tested by
competing against other explorer posts from around the United States in very realistic scenarios
and being graded on their performance and knowledge. Some of the scenarios they will participate
in are; Assault / Family Violence, Misdemeanor Traffic Stops, Accident Investigation, Active
Shooter, Felony Traffic Stops, Hostage Negotiations, Bomb Threat and Standardized Field Sobriety
Testing. Since 2006, the Red Oak Police Explorer Post has come home with trophies from every
competition they have attended.
