Leading Self
All leadership begins with the ability to lead one’s self – to have clarity of purpose, follow up on intentions, act with integrity, and create an impact. Before you can effectively lead others, you must be able to lead yourself.
Leadership Attitude
Leaders have positive attitudes – attitudes that demonstrate faith in others, persistence in the face of setbacks and optimism in the future.
Examples of behaviours that demonstrate a positive attitude include Leaders who:
P remain calm in tense situations
P look for the positive in a situation when it would be easier to make a negative comment
P mediate when others are having disputes
P accept change and interruptions good-naturedly P listen to people with an open mind
P say positive things to and about others
P find the good in others and build their self esteem P avoid gossip and sarcasm
P ‘walk in the shoes of other people’
P focus on possibilities and solutions
Your attitude creates a certain climate or mood around you and directly affects the productivity of your team. When you are upbeat, they respond positively, and productivity increases. When you are negative, morale decreases, productivity drops. If you’re feeling frustration, it may be appropriate to share it but not show it. If you’re feeling joy, it is appropriate to both share it and show it to express your passion and energize your team.
“Attitudes are caught not taught. Your attitude speaks so loudly people can’t hear what you’re saying.” Author Unknown
