Courage
Courage
Leaders take risks. They regularly leave their comfort zone and overcome their fears to learn, grow, innovate and seek change. Effective Leaders create an environment where it is safe to take risks, to develop and improve. Leaders demonstrate courage and lead by example to effect positive change.
Leaders have the courage to:
• Follow their core values and convictions to do what’s right
• Ask questions in a constructive manner to challenge the status quo
• Go against the grain when it is the right thing to do
• Stand up to behaviour that is disrespectful or inappropriate
• Speak from their hearts to express an opinion others may disagree with
• Make decisions and act on them
“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” Robert F. Kennedy
Sometimes fear prevents us from having the courage to take risks. Fear is a negative perception of what may happen. Leaders address their fears rather than be limited by them. Leaders have a clear vision of their core values, their goals and objectives and rely on these to overcome their fears. They rely on a positive attitude to act on their intentions rather than finding barriers or reasons why not to. Leaders demonstrate courage and perseverance to deal with their fears and to achieve their goals.
