When I lived over the road constantly under threat of flood, I used to look up and see people on
this balcony enjoying watching the rest of us getting flooded out. The day I noticed them moving
out my heart sang; I went straight across to the Landlord and asked in the apartment was free.
She said yes. I asked how much per month, and she said a figure that at first I couldn’t believe –
it would be just a little more than what I was paying at the time, but seemed worth it. I asked if I
could take a look. She said yes.
The place is was living in comprised two rooms and a large bathroom. I mentioned about the
windows already. It was small. The door opened directly into the tiny living / kitchen and, if you
closed it, there would be no natural light coming into the main part of the dwelling, so I just kept
it open all the time, using the screen door only. Anything could be better.
The Landlady, Yvonne, an elderly lady, showed me into the place with the balcony and I was
ecstatic! The main living room was already bigger than the entire place I was currently living in!
It formed a large space, with a nice fitted kitchen at one end, a laundry room and the door
leading onto the balcony at the other. Leading away from the living room was a corridor off
which were THREE bedrooms and a bathroom. This could all be mine – she was pleased I was
interested and offered it there and then. I couldn’t believe my luck. I said yes this time and
arranged to move in one month later. She wanted to have some work done inside, as the previous
tenants had not been particular diligent in looking after the place.
