I promise to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:
I will respect the scientific advancement of the physicians who came before me and gladly share what I’ve learned to those who come behind me.
I will remember that medicine is not only a science, but also an art. My ability to be sympathetic and understanding towards my patients may outweigh the effects of any medication.
I will remember that I am not just treating disease, but more importantly focused on understanding the patient and the context of the patient’s illness. To fully take care of the patient, I will look at all related problems, from economic stability to the effect of the illness on the patient’s family.
I will not be afraid to admit when I don’t know something, nor will I fail to ask for help from colleagues when I need it.
I will respect the privacy of my patients, for they are disclosing their problems to me and not to the world. I will remember to use social media and technology cautiously and sparingly. When I use technological innovations, it will be for the enhancement of the patient-physician relationship.
I will remember to take care of myself, for how can I take care of others if I can’t care for myself. I will also remain an engaged member of my society by performing my civic duties and staying current with social and political issues.
If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy my life and feel fulfilled. May I be respected and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act to do so in a way that preserves the finest traditions of my calling. May I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.
