Today, conservation photography is described as photography that empowers or enables conservation.

Through social media, magazines, television, and politics we can witness nearly every angle of our changing

world. The images give us greater insight into the biodiversity of our planet and the effects mankind plays on

it. Images caught of rare species or organisms under the ocean that we may have never been able to see or

even thought of are brought into light. A new awareness is gained into an otherwise unseen world.

To witness these natural sights, species, or environments not only shows us parts of the world we were

unaware of but pulls at the need to protect it within us. Photography is an artform that combined with science

can form connections with a diverse audience. Berensohn stated “If we are going to have a new connection to

the environment it will have to happen in individual hearts and souls…the artist can help us fall in love with

the earth again” (2002). That is exactly what conservation photography aims to do.

The world is spiraling into a new era, an era of pollution, destruction, and greed. People can hear about the

downfall, but often, without seeing it with their eyes, the realness of it is usually misplaced. Images such as

the ones below show the effects humanity plays on the other lifeforms that reside on this planet. Photographs
