Since you are now the ones that will be in charge of behavior management at the school, we also strongly

recommend that you familiarize yourself with the PBIS system and adopt the positive attitudes that come

along with it when you work with the children. It is definitely an adjustment to work in Virgen del Carmen in

terms of student behavior. However, it is of crucial importance to remember that the students only need to

learn positive behaviors in a safe, supportive environment in order to succeed. It is a slow process, but a

process that is predictable and rewarding to witness. Although you almost assuredly will feel frustrated at least

once with a student, try to remember that they are products of their environment and their behaviors serve a

purpose, whether that be to get attention, let out surplus energy, feel important, etc. Be positive and put your

care for the students first, for it will help your experience and theirs. This project was a lot of work, but each

of us are leaving Virgen del Carmen feeling as though we advanced the resources available to the school and

students, allowing them to access behavioral success in school and in their community more than they would

have if we had not adopted this project. The behaviors that PBIS teaches them are behaviors that they need to

learn to build their character and social skills. Remember the value of what you are doing, and rely on the

resources available to you as much as you can. This is what helped us stay productive and motivated. If you

come across an issue that you feel like you cannot surpass and your professors and peers are also unsure how

to proceed, we have left our emails in the appendix. We will try our best to help you; however, it’s important

to note that rather than explaining everything to a third party, it may be easier to reach out to those who are

seeing the context of your struggles first-hand. We learned this through experience. Still, although we hope

issues like this don’t arise, we are glad to support you however we can.
