○ Next Step: Train teachers to…

                        ■ Develop a regular system of rewards, i.e. every two weeks pick a name from the lottery

(of all students who have been placed in there for good behavior) and give a reward to that

                        student

                        ■ Give rewards relatively publicly to motivate other students, but without shaming other

students who didn’t receive a reward.

                        ■ Reward all students at some point… if there’s a student who has never been rewarded

but still behaves well, it would be perfectly fine to pretend their name has been chosen from

                        the lottery.

                        ■ Give group rewards for the whole class. This motivates them to work together. Use the

marble jars and give the whole class, for example, free time outside or game time in the

library when the jar is full.

                        ■ Make sure that the jars for rewards and the posters are visible. Students need to know

that they are always being held accountable for their actions in the classroom, and simply

having PBIS materials made visible to them is a large part of that.

➢ Consistency, particularly with correcting behaviors and reinforcement/rewards

               ○ Teachers do not correct the same behaviors consistently. For example, they will make it clear

that calling out is not permitted but will still respond to students for calling out later in the same day or

even the same activity without reminding students of the expectations or giving a consequence.

               ○ Next step: Train teachers to…

                        ■ Consistently enforce and reinforce the same expectations in the classroom and ALL of

the expectations (pictured on the posters from before). If the expectation is to not call out,

EVERY SINGLE INSTANCE of calling out in the classroom should be acknowledged and

corrected positively. For instance, if all students are calling out, everything should be stopped

to give a reminder to students, i.e. “what is the expectation if you have something to say in

                                                                                                           250
