The graph above shows that disengagement in second grade decreased by a whopping 68%.
These graphs and this data lucidly shows that the implementation of PBIS in Virgen del Carmen
has truly impacted the school in a positive way. All of the “bad behaviors” that we observed decreased
significantly after the school started using the PBIS system. There is still a great deal of improvement that can
be made. However, through all of the obstacles that we had to face, the end results were extremely satisfying
for both us and the school.
RECOMMENDATIONS
After assessing everything that has occurred during our capstone, we definitely have
recommendations for next steps and, perhaps more importantly, information concerning struggles that you
most likely should be prepared to face (which every project did and will have).
At this point, although the data shows an improvement in behavior, we feel as though the most important
thing to focus on now is continuing with professional development with the teachers. The system was not in
place fully enough when we left for us to feel comfortable encouraging any further steps without first
emphasizing this. This isn’t because of a lack of efficiency or effort - it’s just the natural consequence of
asking an entire staff to fundamentally change something about how they do their job. They need more
practice with the system solely in their classroom before PBIS can be expanded to the rest of the school.
