Independent women are empowered women who have ability to develop their own potential

and give benefits for people and environment around them. The exploration of potential or
empowerment of women through economic activities continues to be conducted. Along with

the times, women who used to only depend on their husbands to fulfill their needs, this

condition has changed now. Some women can meet their needs by themselves, even they

have their own income and can help the family economy. Such women's empowerment

program can be found in the village of Tanjung Jone, West Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan by
utilizing the wealth of natural resources through the business of Ulap Doyo woven fabric which

based on the local culture of Dayak.

This research is a descriptive qualitative research with a case study approach. The research was

conducted on female craftweavers of traditional cloth Ulap Doyo in the village of Tanjung

Jone. The data collection technique was done by observation, interviews with dozens of female
craftweavers and documentation. Triangulation was done to test the validity of data.

Meanwhile, in term of data analysis, researchers are guided by the model analysis technique of

Miles and Huberman where in term of analysing the qualitative data was done interactively

and continuously until it is complete, so that the data is saturated. There are some activities in

the data analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation, and making conclusion/
                     verification.

The results showed that Tanjung Jone village is a village which located on the banks of

Mahakam River where most of the people work as fishermen , but it was done at certain time

only, namely in the fishing season or high tide, and in the condition when the dry season fish is

very difficult to be found so that the income of fisherman is sometimes not able to meet the

needs of their family. This condition causes the wives try to help the family economy by

becoming weavers of Ulap Doyo traditional cloth. The weaving tradition in the Tanjung Jone
village is a form of family business as the realization of the sibaliparriq concept which places

women as companions for men to jointly do the responsibility of building their families. There

are 30 weavers who live in 4 RT, including housewives and girls. Their weaving skills are self-

taught. The empowerment of women who produces Ulap Doyo is not only a hobby and help

the family economy but also as a family education institution for young women in teaching
and maintaining moral and cultural values of Dayak. The obstacles which faced by the weavers

are about the raw material for doyo leaves which must be obtained from other villages, limited

capital and marketing and there is no community for the weavers yet, so that they still work

                     individually.

The economic empowerment of women through Ulap Doyo craft which adopts the traditional
culture of the Dayak tribe in Tanjung Jone village needs to be activated and support from

various parties, especially government support so that this local craft can improve the

economy of community as well as a form of preserving the local culture of the Indonesia.
