The existence and sustainability of informal sector activities in the contemporary economic system is

community development and national development. At least when the development program is
not able to provide job opportunities for the workforce, the informal sector with all its shortcomings
is able to act as a reservoir and alternative job opportunities for job seekers. The purpose of this
research is to provide information and results of studies in the form of: 1). Characteristics and factors
that influence the increase in labour in the informal sector, 2). factors which affect the high
participation of women and children working in the informal sector, 3). reasons that push women
and children to make decisions to work in the informal sector 4). the right strategy is employed to
break the chain of children working in the informal sector. The novelty produced is in the form of
determinant factors that affect women and children working in the informal sector as well as
strategies / policies in an effort to break the chain of children working in the informal sector, so that
activities in the form of exploitation of children can be eliminated. The method of collecting
qualitative data is through in-depth interviews with selected and relevant informants using open-
ended questions, which will be used in this study to produce comprehensive information with a
wider and wider perspective on boys and girls. decide to work each depending on 20 types of work
in the informal sector, and women who have been married and married women are 3 informants
each including based on 20 types of informal sector jobs, a total of 120 informants
The results of the study show that the number of women working in the informal sector is 64.5
percent, on the contrary, fewer men work in the informal sector, which is 35.5 percent. There are 65.3
percent of enterprises in the informal sector and the other 34.7 percent are formal enterprises.
Factors influencing the increase in the number of women working in the informal sector are
minimum wage, educational attainment and the number of dependents. Factors that influence the
high participation of women and child workers in the informal sector are husbands not working, low
household income, large number of dependents, spending free time, making their own money and
seeking experience. The reasons why women and children decide to work in the informal sector are
age, educational attainment, working hours, number of dependents. The right strategy for breaking
the chain of children working in the informal sector is informal sector development policy, which
requires direct or indirect government intervention. However, given the limited capacity of
government in terms of funding, the government has to focus on indirect intervention.
