Protection of female workers in oil-palm plantations in Indonesia becomes one of the issues

highlighted by the international world, and it is considered to be negative. There are some

assumptions that oil-palm plantations have violated human rights by not giving protection to

their female workers. To find out to what extent this issue is true, this research is trying to get

the answer to the question. The aim of this research was to find out whether there was
violence against female workers in those plantations. The research was conducted in Lampung

Province. The target villages were Rejosari Village, Natar District of South Lampung Regency,

Sinar Banten Village, Bekri District of Central Lampung Regency, Sidodadi Village and

Sidoharjo Village, Penawar Taman District of Tulang Bawang Regency. Data were collected

using questionnaires and interview (survey) to 121 female workers. Furthermore, in-depth
interview was carried out. The data were analysed in a descriptive statistics way. The results

showed that there was very low violence against female workers (2.4%) in the form of verbal

violence that occurs in public areas (1 case) and oil-palm plantations (2 cases), and there was

no violence against female workers in their work or in their household, whether it was physical

or sexual, as was mentioned by all the respondents (100%). The verbal abuse was not reported
to authorities. The low rate of violence in these female workers is related to the charateristics of

Javanese culture adopted by the community where these female workers live, namely in the

villages whose transmigrants come from Java Island. The Javanese culture prioritizes harmony

and peace of life, balance, accepting-what-happens, and placing an individual under the

community and the community under the universe.
