UiTM Prihatin – Charity Visit 2016
By: Frannelya Francis
USAS (Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences) once again offered its services to the
community at Rumah Kanak-Kanak Kuching (RKK) on 24 July 2016 after a 5-year gap. A group of 58
Nstudents, ranging from those in their third semester to those in their fifth semester, was led by Miss
Frannelya, as the NUSAS Advisor. Together, they departed to the welfare home at 8.00am from campus.
The group was welcomed by the staff and residents of RKK. The briefing session on RKK itself was given by
Encik Zami, a staff of RKK, followed by a speech delivered by Miss Frannelya. The activity was led by Nur
Irfah, who was the Project Leader of this charity visit. Both she and her team led a group of 60 children
from RKK to participate in the activities which they had organized. Among the activities done were hand
painting on the banner, a morning exercise session, games, a health talk on hand-washing and personal
hygiene, as well as a demonstration on bandaging and lice treatment. The children very much enjoyed
the group’s presence at RKK and this was a good exposure for the nursing students as they were able
to better grasp the services needed in the community and identify where they could further offer their
services in the future.
Sharing Love and Kindness
By: Yeo Jiin Yih
group of AM students paid a visit to Sarawak General Hospital on 30 June 2016 during the holy month
of Ramadan. The students learnt to share their love and kindness with the patients at SGH as they
A believed that “the stranger who receives the rare gift of human kindness holds its value in his heart
forever” (Dudley Warner). Thumbs up, girls!
Here’s a short reflection on the charity event by one of the students:
“My friends and I always feel we are really blessed for having a good place to study and support from our
loving parents and family members. During the holy month of Ramadan, it is our responsibility to help those
who are not as fortunate as we are. We decided to do a small charity event that might cheer them up. We
chose to visit the hospital because it is one of the places where the public often visit as they may be the patients or their relatives.
We thought that it would be better if we could visit them face-to-face. We bought and provided some healthy snacks for the
visitors and patients. It was once in a lifetime experience because there were so many different facial expressions they showed
as there were some who refused to receive the snacks. However, most of them thanked us and delighted us with warm smiles and
even praised us for doing such a good deed. We, as university students, felt so proud and relieved that we could make them happy
even though it was a small gesture.”
