01 COMMON WHIPPING

Not the securest of whippings, the Common is nevertheless adequate for most
purposes and is quick to apply. Begin by laying a loop of twine along the rope.
Apply turns over it as far as required and pass the end of the twine through the
loop, which is then drawn down into the centre of the whipping. Cut both ends
               off flush.

Alternatively, lay the end of the whipping twine along the rope (towards the
rope’s working end) and pass turns tightly over it to anchor it and cover it. Apply
further turns, leaving the last few loose so that the end of the twine can be tucked
back under them before they are worked tight to hold it in place. Cut any excess

               twine off flush.
