Understanding the vehicle market in LDCs
Accordingly to figures published by UNEP, 99 % of all passenger cars imported to Kenya
are second hand and may reflect a typicial dynamic in LDCs. Not surprisingly that the Sub-
Saharia African passenger market is not widely on the "radar screen" of the traditional car
manufacturers.
In the entire Sub-Saharia African passenger car market 4.7 million were sold in 2007,
accordingly to figures published by the Global Fuel Economy Initiative. Experts predict that
the number of vehicles in developing countries will increase four- or five-fold by 2050.
Looking at numbers from Indonesia, motorbikes takes a portion of 81 % of the entire
vehicle market [in units]. While this ratio varies from country to country, it highly indicates
the importance of motorbikes in developing and emerging markets.
