FOURTEEN
Sew-and-Serve Eye Splice
Served ropework lends an air of tradition and, for the owner of a traditional
vessel, a few of these splices aboard would add a nice touch of the old days.
This splice works very well for double-braid, eight-plait, and twelve-plait
rope. The splice requires a layer of serving; it is important that the sewing
be very tight and the taper very smooth.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
Double-braid rope
Serving mallet or heaver
Whipping twine
Sharp knife
Lay out your line forming the necessary eye. For the length of the splice, allow
seven or eight times the inside diameter of the eye.
Place a tight seizing at the throat, then remove the tape or melted tip from the
end of the tail and taper the tail smoothly with an angled cut through the coat and
core. The cut should terminate 3 to 5 inches (75 to 125 mm) back from the end.
