SEIZING
TOOLS & MATERIALS
Ropes to be seized
Nylon small stuff
The size and construction of the small stuff are your choice.
Form a loop at the end of the small stuff and tuck the end two or three times
through the lay of its standing part. If the ropes being seized are three-strand,
work in the direction opposite the lay.
Circle the ropes to be seized, and anchor the working end of the small stuff by
threading it through the loop and doubling it back upon itself. Apply eight to ten
wraps around the ropes, taking care to cover the tail.
Take a hitch (as shown) and, working back across the seizing, place a layer of
wraps over the first layer. These wraps are called riding turns because they
“ride” on the first layer. The riding turns should not be as tight as the original
turns and should number one fewer.
Pass the working end through the original loop and wrap two turns across the
seizing, between the two ropes (see drawing next page); take up any slack.
Tie a Flat Knot (see illustration). Draw the knot tight and clip close.
