Clamp your wire in the vise the “right way,” literally. To do this, stand facing
the vise with the wire bent in your hand. The working end of the wire—the 2-
foot (600 mm) end—should be in your right hand; the standing part should be in
your left. Now put your piece in the vise and clamp it down. During splicing,
you’ll probably want to stand on the left side of your work.
On the working end, unlay all the strands and tape the ends.
Insert the marlinspike into the wire at the marked point from left to right, as
shown opposite in A (mark 1). Take care to go over the top of the heart, or core,
of the standing part and pick up only three strands of the standing part. Now
rotate the marlinspike one full circle down the wire around the heart of the
standing part, as if the spike were a sort of propeller with the wire as its hub. The
spike will travel down the wire from position 1 to position 3. Leave the
marlinspike stuck through the wire.
