               Tugboat Splice

Here’s a simple wire splice that also goes by two other commonly known names:

the Molly Hogan and the Flemish Eye. Since setting this splice requires very few
tools, it’s an ideal splice for a quick, temporary repair. It’s commonly used in
static situations, such as when landscapers need to hold trees in place or when
telephone linemen need to anchor telephone poles and towers temporarily. I’ve
seen highway guardrails that are held in place with this splice—but that is not an
appropriate use of it. Never use this splice for anything beyond a temporary hold
—in fact, several states have outlawed its use altogether!
