The ideal material for learning to splice wire is the 9/16-inch (14 mm) 6 × 17
blue galvanized combination wire rope used on fishing trawlers. It’s flexible
enough to splice with your fingers. The center strand is straight and thick, and
each strand that encircles it is wrapped in polypropylene.
