Mill Valley Splice
If the Liverpool Wire Splice (page 148) is the king of wire splicing, the Mill
Valley Splice is the queen. Like the Tugboat Splice (page 160), it is used in static
situations, serving as stays aboard ship, for example. This is a challenging splice
and not readily done
The Mill Valley Splice has a long history, but is not an easy splice. Here, a Mill
Valley Splice (top) found on a Concordia yawl is displayed next to a more recent
Mill Valley Splice shown before its final service with tarred nylon. Note the
seizing under the thimble. (Molly Mulhern) anywhere but in a rigging shop by
professional riggers. Because of its stiff and springy nature, it can be difficult to
work. I recommend that you have some experience with the Liverpool Wire
Splice and are comfortable with it before attempting this one.
