Single hook hitch
An adaptation of the pile hitch (see page 171), this secure hook hitch does not (unlike the single
Blackwall hitch) fall apart when relieved of its load. It was first suggested by the respected
American knotting author Clifford Warren Ashley in 1944.
Make a bight in the end of the rope and take it through the mouth of the hook (1). Wrap it around
the hook’s back and loop it over its bill (2). Take care to locate the short end nearest the bill of the
hook, as the knot is more reliable that way.
