Single Blackwall hitch

Do not use this hook hitch, which was familiar to riggers in eighteenth-century dockyards, for

lifting loads. It is a way of harnessing a hook to pull, drag, or apply tension to something by
means of a lanyard, which can be quickly attached and just as readily cast off.

Pass the end of the line through the mouth of the hook and around the back (1). Then tuck it
beneath its own standing part (2). Ensure that the end is firmly trapped as the load is applied.
