Slipped sheet bend
All knots depend for their holding power on a combination of friction and nip, both of which
are minimal (although adequate) in the common sheet bend. This quick-release version may,
curiously, increase both nip and friction somewhat, because the knot is fattened by the insertion
of an extra knot part and added crossing points.
Begin as if tying a basic sheet bend (see page 25), making a bight in the larger line with the ends
facing to the left (1). Insert the working end of the smaller line up through the bight from the
bottom (2). Pass the end around the back of bight from left to right (3). Do not pull the working
end completely through beneath its own standing part, but make a drawloop, before tightening the
knot (4).
