Seizing bend
This is an alternative to the racking bend (see page 28) and a trifle easier to tie. It was devised and
first published in 1986 by retired research scientist and inventor Dr. Harry Asher.
Make a bight in the larger or stiffer of two dissimilar lines, and take a turn around it with the
smaller or more manageable one (1). Allow a couple of inches (about 5–6 cm) and begin a series of
tight, wrapping turns with the working end back toward the tip of the bight (2, 3). Then pull out
the initial round turn and pass the resulting loop over the short end of the bight (4). Work the knot
tight and, for extra security, tie the working end to its own standing part with a bowline (see page
63) (5).
