Surgeon’s knot
This knot may have gotten its name from being used to tie natural suture material, because it is
secure in many types of natural rope. The surgeon’s knot forms a secure bend in today’s
synthetic materials as well, and is fairly easy to untie after a load.
Start with the two working ends crossed, with the left line placed on top of the right and
overlapped by about 1 ft (30 cm). Bring the top line beneath the other with two complete wraps
(1). Cross the working ends again, this time with the right side over the left (2). Bring the top line
beneath and around the other with one wrap (3). Pull mainly on the standing ends to tighten (4).
