Hunter’s bend
Hunter’s bend (named after Dr. Edward Hunter, but also known as the rigger’s bend) is a very
secure knot that takes a little practice to tie quickly, but forms a secure knot when complete.
Start with two ends of rope overlapped by about 1 ft (30 cm) (1). Form a loop in one end, and
mirror it with the other end, so that they lie against each other, facing in opposite directions (2).
Each free end should then be passed around the loop from the outside of the knot, then through
the loop itself. The two ends will pass through the loops in opposite directions (3). Pull outward on
the standing parts and work the knot to tighten (4). The remaining working ends can be trimmed
close to the knot if necessary (5).
