Needle knot
More streamlined than the preceding nail knot, this is another way to attach a fly line to a
monofilament leader; and, because the thinner line is actually inserted into the thicker one, it is
also more secure.
Thread the fly line onto a needle, insert the needle into the end of the leader (1), and force it out
through the side (2); alternatively, heat the needle and make a hole, then push the fly line (end
carefully pointed with a razor blade) through after it. Make a series of wrapping turns (3, 4), using
the needle in the same way as you did the nail when tying the nail knot (see pages 48–49). Tuck
the end through the space created by the needle (5). Tighten the knot and snip the tag end off
close to it (6).
