Twin bowline bend
This heavy-duty bend can be employed to join together a couple of thick and less flexible ropes
or cables, such as towlines, whether on land or afloat. First, learn the common bowline (see page
63); then this adaptation will be easier to tie.
Lay the two lines together, parallel and pointing in opposite directions. Create a loop in the
standing part of one line and pass the working end of the other line up through it (1). Then pass it
around behind the standing part, and back down beside itself (2). Turn the work end-for-end and
repeat the process (3, 4, 5). Tighten each knot in turn by tugging the standing and working ends
away from one another (6).
