MAY IS COMMUNITY LIVING MONTH!

Community Living movement. Every May, Madoc COPE along with over 100 other agencies celebrate
#CLInspiringPossibilities for the inclusion of people who have an intellectual disability and their families!
About Community Living
The Community Living movement strives to promote authentic community inclusion for people who have an intellectual
disability and their families. This movement all began with families who wanted more for their loved ones. They wanted
change! They wanted to see their love ones be supported in their own community; strive in their own communities and not
taken away to an institution.
From one person wanting more, questioning why not and getting a group together we have seen:
- Family involvement
- Community Programing beginning
- Community Living Ontario Opening
- The closing of institutions
- Individual planning and person centre support
- And now the Journey to belonging: Choice and Inclusion – the ministry’s long-term vision of Developmental services in
Ontario, where people with developmental disabilities are supported to fully participate in their communities and live
fulfilling
In 1975 Madoc COPE was created using a leap grant but it
all started with a community member saying we need more
– why not – the community needs this! Madoc COPE’s
mission is to enhance the quality of life for persons with
developmental disabilities through community participation
and the promotion of independence. Our vision is to
support individuals in a community where everyone is
valued as being equal and treated with dignity and respect.
