GIRL GUIDES – NOMINATED FOR NOBEL PEACE PRICE
The Guiding and Scouting movement, both represented by the
World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and
the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) have
been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Scouting and Guiding,
two of the world’s largest youth organizations that have worked
to create lasting peace and dialogue in communities around the
world for more than a century, have been nominated for the
Noble Peace Prize for their work in "giving young people the tools
they need to solve the challenges of the future, while building
strong civil society."
The Girl Guides offers young people a chance to rally around a set
of common values and a belief focused in service, not only to one’s
own community, but to international society.
The nomination comes in the same year that WAGGGS is focusing
its World Thinking Day activities on peace building. The guides
and scouts celebrate and amplify the story of those in the
Movement who are building peace within their communities. As a
Movement of more than 10 million girls and young women in 152
countries, the work they do to build intercultural communication,
understanding and collaboration is global.
