Safe lifting can prevent injury and damage to company merchandise. This activity will allow you to practice
safe lifting techniques that will help prevent injury. Read the proper steps for lifting a heavy item, lowering
a heavy item, and lifting with a partner.

• Keep the load close to your body • Keep the load close to your body WELCOME & ORIENTATION / TRAINING ROADMAP
• Bend at the knees • Bend at the knees
• Keeping your back straight, slowly lift the object • Keeping your back straight, lower the object
Have your learning coach or coworker demonstrate safe lifting [using the guidelines above]. Ask any
questions before performing the same lift.
LIFTING WITH A PARTNER
When lifting with a partner it is important to discuss what you are going to do before you lift the object
and to continue that communication throughout the lift.
When lifting with a partner, follow these steps:
➊ Clear a path
➊ Discuss what you are going to do before lifting the object
➊ Communicate with each other (if you need to stop for a moment, let your coworker know immediately)
Note: When carrying an item up stairs, discuss each person’s role. The coworker at the bottom needs to
carry most of the weight. The coworker up front needs to guide and direct.
